How does digestion occur in ruminants like cows?

Class: Class 5 Subject: Science Topic: Basic Concepts of Science

Chewing the Cud (First Chewing)

·         Cows quickly chew and swallow grass without chewing it completely.

·         The food goes into the first part of the stomach called the rumen, where bacteria start breaking down the food.

            Regurgitation (Bringing Back the Food)

·         The cow later brings the partially digested food (called cud) back into its mouth from the rumen.

             Second Chewing (Chewing the Cud)

·         The cow chews the cud slowly and properly.

·         This helps break the food into smaller parts for better digestion.

        Swallowing Again

·         After chewing the cud, the food is swallowed again and passes into the other parts of the stomach (reticulum, omasum, abomasum) where it is fully digested.

     Absorption and Waste Removal

·         The nutrients are absorbed, and the waste is removed through the large intestine.
