Why did British historians focus only on kings and battles? What were the limitations of this approach?

Class: Class 8 Subject: Social Studies Topic: History

Early British historians believed history should only record rulers, wars, dynasties, and political events. That is why they divided Indian history into “Hindu”, “Muslim”, and “British” periods. However, this approach had many limitations. It ignored the lives of ordinary people such as peasants, workers, artisans, and women. It also failed to study changes in society, economy, and culture. By dividing history into religious periods, it created a false impression of constant conflict between Hindus and Muslims. This narrow view glorified rulers and battles while neglecting real social and economic processes. Modern historians now study every aspect of life to provide a complete and balanced picture of the past.
