Describe Bohr’s model of the hydrogen atom and its drawbacks.

Class: Class 11 Subject: Chemistry Topic: Hydrogen

Bohr’s Model:

·         Electrons revolve around the nucleus in fixed orbits (energy levels).

·         Energy is absorbed/emitted when electrons jump between levels.

·         Angular momentum is quantized: mvr=nh2πmvr = \frac{nh}{2\pi}mvr=2πnh

Drawbacks:

·         Couldn't explain spectra of multi-electron atoms.

·         Violated Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle.

·         Didn't explain Zeeman effect and Stark effect.
