A rocket with a lift-off mass 20,000 kg is blasted upwards with an initial acceleration of 5.0 ms^-2. Calculate the initial thrust (force) of the blast.

Class: Class 11 Subject: Physics Topic: Speed,Acceleration and Distance

It is known that,

Mass of the rocket,m= 20,000 kg

Initial acceleration,a=5ms^-2

Acceleration due to gravity,g =10ms^-2

By using Newton’s second law of motion,

The net force (thrust) acting on the rocket can be written as:

F-mg=ma

F= m( g+a)

F= 20000(10+5) = 20000 X 5

F= 3 X 10^5 N

Therefore, the initial thrust(force) of the blast is 3 X 10^5 N.
