A child sits stationary at one end of a long trolley moving uniformly with a speed on a smooth horizontal floor. If the child gets up and runs about on the trolley in any manner, what is the speed of the CM of the (trolley + child) system?

Class: Class 11 Subject: Physics Topic: Speed,Acceleration and Distance

There will not be any change in the speed of the centre of mass of the given system.

The child is running arbitrarily on a trolley that is moving forward with velocity . However, the running of the child will have no effect on the velocity of the centre of mass of the trolley. This happens because the force due to the motion of the child is purely internal. Internal forces in a body produce no effect on the motion of the bodies on which they are acting. Because there is no external force involved in the (child + trolley) system, the child’s motion will not produce any change in the speed of the centre of mass of the trolley.
